Post-doctoral/Ph.D position in spin physics in diamond nanostructures beyond the diffraction limit

July 14, 2014

We advertise a post-doctoral position in a joint project of the Hell group at the Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry, Department of NanoBiophotonics (http://www.4pi.de/), and the Bar-Gill group at the Hebrew University (http://bargill.phys.huji.ac.il) in Israel, focused on spin physics in diamond nanostructures beyond the diffraction limit.

The nitrogen-vacancy (NV) color center in diamond has recently emerged as a promising candidate both for quantum assisted sensing and quantum information. This solid-state spin system features remarkable properties, as e.g. nearly perfect spin polarizability, very long coherence times, high-fidelity spin manipulation through microwaves, and all-optical spin readout - all at room temperature.

In this project we will combine techniques for coherent NV spin manipulation and control with stimulated emission depletion (STED) super-resolution microscopy, to investigate fundamental spin physics at the nanoscale.

The successful candidate will study the fundamental spin dynamics occurring in nanodiamonds and nanofabricated structures in diamond. The research will take place in Jerusalem, with extended visits to Prof. Hell’s NanoBiophotonics department at MPI Gottingen.

The scientific findings of this investigation will have wide-ranging implications for the applications of NV centers or other defect centers in solids to quantum information processing, quantum dynamics, quantum assisted metrology, and sensing in biological and chemical samples.

The applicant should have a strong experimental background in optics and lasers, with an advantage to experience in nanofabrication and theory of quantum spin dynamics.

Interested applicants should send a CV, a letter of intent and 2 recommendation letters to bargill@phys.huji.ac.il.

Starting date is flexible, preferably before Sept. 2014.
